[22:07] <Flaxton> I have given linux to 1 of my customers and it was endless tech support, for 2 week until I went and installed windows. I will never recomend linux to a customer ever again.
[22:07] <SkippyX> http://www.puppylinux.org/ - IIRC he has more than one system, so obtaining it shouldn't be a problem.
[22:08] <SkippyX> Yeah - some people shouldn't be running linux, but as a recovery method to harvest files from a hdd that won't boot you can't beat it.
[22:09] <SkippyX> I dunno. I've done some linux installs for people and they're happy. I work at the Goodwill computer works and we sold a linux box to a guy that didn't know beans about PCs. He called once and that was the last I heard from him. I presume he's happy.

[22:12] <Flaxton> so he goes to the website and it installs linux on your computer? what is the next step?
[22:14] <SkippyX> No, he goes to the website, d/ls the .iso, burns the .iso to cd. put the cd into the optical drive of the offending machine and boot to cd.
[22:14] <SkippyX> The OS installs itself in RAM (need 256 megs) and is run entirely from RAM - which makes it great for really old systems (btw).
[22:16] <SkippyX> Plug a flash drive into a USB port. Down at the bottom of the screen he'll see an icon that looks like a hdd. click the icon and it brings up a file manager. open another file manager to access the USB drive (click the icon), then browse the non-booting windows drive and drag the files he wants to keep over to the flash drive.
[22:17] <SkippyX> It doesn't work that way when trying to harvest files from a mac (gotta mount the drive), but w/ Win XP it's automagically mounted.
[22:37] <SkippyX> OK - I'm off. Have fun.
